Credit Union Information
What is a credit union?
A Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. Originating in Europe about 150 years ago, the first credit unions were formed in the United States about 60 years later continuing with the simple idea that people could pool their money together for mutual benefit and economic stability.

What makes credit unions different?
Credit Unions offer many of the same products and services that other types of financial institutions do. However, most types of financial institutions answer to stockholders who are seeking a profit, a profit that accountholders pay in the form of fees and charges.  Because a credit union has no stockholders, value is returned to its members in the form of lower rates on loans, higher dividends on savings, or invested into additional products to meet the changing needs of its membership.

Over time, credit unions have helped their members through economic depression, recession, and inflation. Today, there are over 72 million credit union members in the U.S. and approximately 108 million members worldwide.
